A small (14 miles long and 8 miles across at its broadest point) freshwater lake in northern Israel; often mentioned in the Bible. It is called the Sea of Kinneret (Lake Kinneret) in the Old Testament. The name Galilee is used in the New Testament. It is also called Lake Tiberias for a city on its shore. The Sea of Galilee lies on the Jordan plain in Israel, 30 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. It touches the Golan Heights on the northeast. The Jordan River flows southward through it.
