Kuroshima Denji was born on an island in Japan’s Inland Sea. Conscripted into the army in 1919, he returned to Japan and joined the proletarian literature movement and wrote of his experiences in Siberia. Kuroshima’s works include numerous short stories and a novel, Busoseru shigai (Militarized Streets, 1930), which describes Japanese aggression against China.
