Takamura Kotaro was a sculptor who was also famous for his poetry. He studied in Japan and traveled to the United States and Europe from 1906 to 1908 to study with famous sculptors. His sculptures reflect his admiration for Rodin in particular. As a free verse poet he is famous for his anthology of poems titled Chieko sho (1941; tr. Chieko’s Sky, 1978), about his wife, Takamura Chieko, who passed away in 1938 following a long battle with mental illness.
