Furui Yoshikichi was an author and translator who graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in German literature. He worked as an assistant professor of German literature at Rikkyo University until 1970, when he retired to write full time. His 1971 novella Yoko was awarded the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize. He also won the 1983 Tanizaki Jun’ichiro Prize for Asagao (Morning Glory, 1975), and the 1986 Kawabata Yasunari Prize for Nakayama saka (On Nakayama Hill, 1985).
