“Izu no odoriko” (1926; tr. The Izu Dancer, 1955) was Kawabata Yasunari’s first widely acclaimed work. This short story, about a young man’s attraction to a dancing girl and his subsequent change of emotion upon finding she is still a child, has been translated into English many times. It has also been made into several films.
