Koda Rohan, given name Shigeyuki, was the author of two Meiji stories, Furyubutsu (The Elegant Buddha, 1889) and Goju no to (1891–92; tr. Pagoda, 1959). His Romantic, gothic style paired well with that of his contemporary, Ozaki Koyo. Koda was one of the first persons to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit when it was established in 1937. He was the father of novelist Koda Aya.
