Nakae Chomin, given name Tokusuke, was an influential philosopher and translator during the Meiji period. Nakae translated a number of French works into Japanese after studying in France in the 1870s as a member of the Iwakura Mission. A radical supporter of the Freedom and People’s Rights Movement, he authored works discussing democracy and criticizing the Meiji government.
