Yamamoto Michiko is the pen name of Furuya Michiko, a poet and prize-winning author of short stories. She based her first collection of short stories, Betei-san no niwa (1973; tr. Betty-san, 1983) on her experiences in Australia, where she had traveled with her husband. It won the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize in 1973. Yamamoto currently resides in Tokyo.
