Hayama Yoshiki was an author associated with the proletarian literature movement. His bestknown work is Umi ni ikuru hitobito (Men Who Live on the Sea, 1933), a novel about labor conditions on workboats. Hayama spent time in prison for his involvement with the labor movement, but became a nationalist during World War II. See also MARXISM.
