American talmudic scholar. He was born in Kovno, Lithuania, and emigrated to the US. He joined the staff of the Jewish Encyclopedia as editor of the rabbinic department. In 1903 he was appointed professor of Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary. His writings deal with the origins of aggadah, halakhah, and the literature of the geonim. In The Legends of the Jews he collected together legends, maxims and parables from midrashic literature.
