(1751-93)
English convert to Judaism. He was president of the United Protestant League and was implicated in the serious anti-Catholic riots of 1780. As a result he was tried for high treason, but was acquitted. In 1787 he was circumcised and assumed the name Israel ben Abraham. He was later tried for libel and was imprisoned in Newgate, London, where he surrounded himself with foreign Jews.
