(1917-94)
Israeli rabbi of Polish origin. After settling in Palestine he joined the Haganah and fought in the War of Independence. He became chief chaplain of Haganah and was later responsible for the organization of the military chaplaincy and regulations for religious observance in the army. In 1961 he received the Israel Prize for the first volume of his comprehensive commentary on the Jerusalem Talmud. He was elected Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Tel Aviv-Jaffa in 1968 and of Israel in 1972.
