(1926-98)
Israeli playwright and short-story writer. He was born in Tel Aviv. He was the first playwright to eschew the social realism characteristic of Israeli drama in the early 1950s. In 1963 he established his own theatre in Tel Aviv. His plays synthesize Israeli consciousness and European cultural sources. The Sephardi working-class quarter in Tel Aviv is the setting for his short stories.
