American rabbi, writer and educator. He taught Hebrew and German at New York University between 1885 and 1906. He served as a preacher at the East 86th Street Synagogue in New York and rabbi of the B'nai Jeshurun Congregation in Patterson, New Jersey. In 1878 he became editor of the Jewish Messenger and continued in that post until the journal merged with the American Hebrew in 1903. His publications include A Modern Hebrew Poet: The Life and Writings of Moses Chaim Luzzatto and What is Judaism?
