(fl. 9th cent BCE)
Israelite woman of Sidonite origin, wife of Ahab, and daughter of Ethbaal, King of Sidon. She introduced her native cult of Baal worship into Israel, thereby arousing the anger of Elijah. In I and II Kings she is portrayed as a callous woman who unjustly brought about the death of Naboth and persecuted the prophets (I Kings 16-11 Kings 9). She was killed in Jehu's revolt against the monarchy.
