Joachim, Joseph
(1831-1907)
   German violinist of Hungarian origin. He was born in Kopcseny and moved with his family to Budapest. He studied under Felix Mendelssohn, and later led Liszt's orchestra at Weimar. From 1854 to 1864 he was concertmaster and conductor of the Royal Hanoverian Orchestra. During this period he converted to Christianity. In 1866 he settled in Berlin, where he was director of the Hochschule fur Musik, and founded the Joachim Quartet. His compositions, mainly for violin, include Hebrew Melodies.
