Palestinian tanna. Born in Usha, he was a pupil of his father and of Tarphon and Akiva. His account of their teachings was used by Judah ha-Nasi in compiling the Mishnah. He was the original author of the Siphra and was a renowned aggadist. After the Hadrianic persecutions, he helped to establish the academy at Usha.
