Lithuanian writer. Born in Smorgon in the province of Vilna, he lived in Turkey, Palestine, Germany, France and Switzerland. In 1921 he settled in Palestine, where he taught at the Jerusalem Rehavyah Gymnasium. His novel By Herself was regarded as the first Zionist novel in Hebrew literature. His other novels include Daniel Shafranov, Victory, Shelomo Molkho, Between the Sea and the Desert, The Narrow Path, History of One Family, The Empty Space, In the Shadow of the Gallows and Story Without Heroes.
