Kovner, Abba
(1918-87)
   Lithuanian resistance fighter and Hebrew poet. Born in Sevastopol, he grew up in Vilna. He was a commander of the Vilna Ghetto and fought the Germans as leader of the partisan groups in the surrounding forests. In 1945 he settled in Palestine, but he was imprisoned in Egypt by the British when he attempted to return to Europe to continue Jewish rescue work. His poems and novels deal with Jewish partisans during the Nazi period and Israel's War of Independence.
