Russian journalist, educator and publisher. He was born in Lithuania. He contributed to the Russian liberal press, and in 1871 began to publish a literary-historical anthology, the Jewish Library. In 1881 he founded the monthly journal Voskhod, later adding a weekly supplement in which he attacked Hibbat Zion, Zionists and those who hated Jews.
