(1839-92)
French rabbi and scholar. He was a tutor in Bayonne and Paris, and later served as a rabbi at St Etienne. In 1869 he was appointed secretary of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. From 1878 he taught Jewish history at the Ecole Rabbinique. He wrote studies of biblical and talmudic literature, medieval historiography, and Jewish history in Spain and France.
