Meir (Meyerson), Golda
(1898-1978)
   Israeli politician. She was born in Kiev, and emigrated to the US in 1906. In 1921 she settled in Palestine. Active in Labour Zionism, she held important positions in the Histadrut and the Jewish Agency. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, she was appointed minister to Moscow. In 1949 she was elected to the Knesset as a member of Mapai. Later she was minister of labour in successive governments, and from 1956 to 1966 she served as foreign minister. She was prime minister from 1969 to 1974.
