French author and sociologist. He was born in Tunis. He fought with the Free French during World War II, and later became head of a psychology institute in Tunis. In 1966 he became professor at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. His writings, which concern north African Jewry, include Pillar of Salt, Agar: Portrait of a Jew and The Liberation of the Jew.
