American Sephardi rabbi. He was born in Birmingham, England, and served as a rabbi to the new Sephardi congregation of Manchester from 1874 to 1877. He then emigrated to New York, where he served as a rabbi to the Shearith Israel congregation. He was a founder of the Union of Orthodox Congregations of America, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the New York Board of Jewish Ministers. He wrote about Jewish and general topics for the weekly paper American Hebrew. His works include Looking Ahead, Bar Mitzvah, Esther and Harbonah, Jewish Religion Ethically Presented, Jewish History Ethically Presented, Mekor Hayyim: Mourners' Handbook and Derekh Hayyim: Way of Life.
