(1907-82)
French politician. Born in Paris, he joined the radical socialist party and later became a member of the national assembly. He held a junior post in the Popular Front government from 1936-8. After the Nazi occupation, he became a member of the Resistance. He was imprisoned but escaped to Britain and joined the Free French under General de Gaulle. Later he served as finance commissioner in Algeria. He was minister for economic affairs and then French governor of the Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In 1954 he became prime minister.
