Morpurgo, Samson
(1681-1740)
   Italian rabbi and physician. He was born in Gradisca d'Isonzo, in Friuli. He became a member of the bet din of the kabbalist Joseph Fiametta in 1709, and he later served as a rabbi in Ancona. He had contacts with all the great scholars of his generation, and his skills as a doctor were widely recognized. In 1713 he was involved in the polemics of the rabbis against Nehemiah Hayyon. He published a polemic against the priest Luigi Maria Benetelli, who wrote an anti-Semitic work. He also wrote numerous responsa and a philosophical commentary on Jedaiah Bedersi's Behinat Olam.
