Neander, Johann August Wilhelm (Mendel, David)
(1789-1850)
   German church historian. Of Jewish birth, he was a convert to Christianity. He became a professor of church history at Berlin University, and in 1847 opposed the admission of Jews to the university. During the Damascus Affair, he argued that the murder charge against members of the Jewish community was a falsehood.
