High priest, grandson of Onias I. He wished to free the Jewish people from the yoke of Ptolemaic Egypt; in pursuit of this aim he conspired with the enemies of Ptolemy III and withheld payment of taxes. Ptolemy responded by threatening to expel the Jews from Judea, but was pacified through the intervention of Onias' nephew, Joseph son of Tobias.
