French banker and communal leader. He settled in Paris in 1812, where he founded the firm Rothschild Freres. A financier to the Bourbon and Orleans kings of France, he later served Napoleon II. From 1840 the Rothschild family was active in the Jewish Consistory of Paris, the Central Consistory of the Jews of France, and the Jewish Charity Committee of Paris. They also played a role in the Damascus Affair.
