Lithu-anian scholar. He was born in Zhagory. He founded the Musar movement in Lithuania and Russia from around 1830, and set up 'Musar houses' for the study of ethical literature. He also published a journal, Tevunah, to promote his views. His pupils helped to spread the Musar movement, particularly among the Torah students of Lithuania. Salanter also travelled to Western Europe to propagate his ideas. Isaac Belzer collected his ethical writings in Or Israel.
