Schwarzbard, Shalom
(1886-1938)
   Russian Yiddish poet. He was born in Izmail, Bessarabia. He was active in the revolutionary movement of 1905, and in 1906 fled from Russia to Paris, where he worked as a watchmaker. In World War I he served in the French Foreign Legion, but in 1917 he returned to Russia, where he joined the Red Guard. In 1920 he went on a mission to Paris to assassinate Simon Petlyura, who had carried out pogroms in the Ukraine. His autobiography Inem Iloyf fun yoren describes his experiences.
