American Yiddish journalist. Born in Russia, he settled in the US, where he became a leader of the socialist movement. In 1890 he founded the Yiddish Marxist weekly Die arbeiter zeitung, and in 1897 helped to establish the labour daily newspaper Forverts. In 1905 he founded Die varheit, which later altered its ideology from socialism to Zionism.
