Israeli statesman and Zionist leader, brother of Yehudah Sharett. He was born in Kherson, in the Ukraine, and settled in Palestine in 1906. Active in socialist circles, he became head of the Jewish Agency's political department in 1933. He was a leader of the campaign against the policy set out by the British in the White Paper of 1939. In 1946 he was interned at Latrun. Later he was appointed foreign minister of the provisional government of Israel, and led the Israeli delegation to the United Nations Assembly (1949-50). He subsequently served as foriegn minister, and from 1953 to 1955 was prime minister. He was appointed chairman of the executive of the Jewish Agency in 1961.
