Sintzheim, Joseph David
(1745-1812)
   French rabbi. He was born in Trier. He was head of the yeshivot in Bischheim and Strasbourg. During the Reign of Terror he fled from France, but later returned to Strasbourg, where he served as rabbi. In 1806 he was appointed to the French Assembly of Jewish Notables, and formulated the replies to the 12 questions put to the Assembly by Napoleon. In 1807 he became president of the Great Sanhedrin and in 1808 chief rabbi of the Central French Consistory. His Yad David consists of responsa on sections of the Talmud.
