Specter, Mordecai
(1858-1925)
   Ukrainian Yiddish novelist and editor. He was born in Uman. Initially he wrote sketches and novels, including Deryidisher muzhik, which advocated the return of the Jews to productive labour in Palestine. In 1857 he settled in Warsaw, where he wrote travel sketches, short stories and novels, and also edited a series of anthologies; in 1894 he helped to set up the important anthology, Yontev bletlekh. He moved to New York in 1921, and shortly before the end of his life wrote a volume of memoirs, Mayn lebn.
