Lithuanian Hasidic leader. He was a pupil of Israel ben Eliezer Baal Shem Tov and Dov Ber of Mezhirich. He practised as an itinerant preacher, stressing the importance of purifying moral attributes. He was the founder of a dynasty of tzaddikim. His son, Mordecai of Chernobyl (1770-1837), lived in some splendour and was greatly revered.
