American economic and social historian. He was born in Turobin, Poland. He worked as the librarian of the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary, before emigrating in 1934 to Palestine, where he lectured at the School of Economics. Later he settled in New York and held a succession of teaching posts - at the Herzliah Teachers' Seminary, the Jewish Teachers' Seminary, Brooklyn College, Columbia University and Yeshiva University. From 1949 he was professor of Jewish history and economics at Dropsie College. He wrote studies of Jewish life and history.
