(1882-1955)
Russian historian, sociologist and communal worker. He lived in Galicia, Vienna and Berlin. After returning to Russia, he lectured at the institute of Baron David Gunzburg in St Petersburg (1909-12). From 1914 to 1916 he was the editor of the periodical History of the Jewish People in Moscow. He lived in London for a time, then moved to Germany and served as secretary to the Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden; in the period 1933-7 he helped to organize the emigration of Jews from Germany. Subsequently he became professor of Jewish history at Yeshiva University in New York. His writings include studies of Eastern European Jewish history.
