Danish writer. The brother of Georg Brandes, he studied at the University of Copenhagen. He specialized in Persian and Sanskrit, but later turned to liter-ature and politics. With his brother, he produced the periodical Det 19. Aahundrede. He also was a journalist for the Radical party. Later he founded and edited Politiken. He subsequently served as minister of finance.
