French orien-talist, son of Joseph Derenbourg. He lectured in Arabic at the Ecole des Langues Orientales Vivants in Paris, and on oriental languages at the £cole Rabbinique. In 1885 he became professor of Arabic at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes. He wrote studies of Arabic grammar, literature and religion, and of Semitic manuscripts and inscriptions.
