German composer. Born in Hamburg, he began as a violinist, but eventually turned to conducting and composing. He was appointed to a number of posts in German opera houses. During the 1920s he wrote for the cinema. Eventually he emigrated to New York, but in 1948 settled in Berlin and served as professor of the German Academy of Arts.
