(1884-1973)
Israeli historian and educator of Ukrainian origin. He emigrated to Palestine in 1921. From 1923 to 1948 he taught at the Jewish Teachers' Training College in Jerusalem, of which he later became head. In 1948 he was appointed professor of modern Jewish history at the Hebrew University. He was elected to the first Knesset (1949-51) as a Mapai delegate and from 1951 to 1955 was minister of education and culture. He edited the Jewish historical quarterly Zion and wrote on Jewish and Zionist history.
