(1878-1957)
German poet and novelist. He was born in Stettin and became a psychiatrist. His first novels were expressionist in nature. In 1933 he fled from Germany to France and then to the US. In his novels of this period he criticized Jewish assimilationists and Zionists. In 1940 he converted to Catholicism. After World War II he returned to Germany, where he continued his literary activity.
