Cellist of Galician origin. Born in Kolomea, Galicia, he made his debut at the age of ten. His official debut with the Vienna Philharmonic took place in 1914. He made regular appearances with numerous orchestras, and in 1929 he became professor at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin. With the rise of Hitler, he left Germany and went on a world tour appearing with leading orchestras.
