Fortas, Abe
(1910-82)
   American lawyer. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he taught at Yale University. Later he entered the Department of the Interior becoming its undersecretary. In 1965 he became a member of the US Supreme Court. In 1968 he was nominated to succeed retiring Chief Justice Earl Warren, but this was opposed by a coalition of Republican and Southern Democrats.
