Babylonian sectarian. He was the founder of the Akbaraites who seceded form the Karaite community. He did not recognize the masoretic emendations in the text of the Bible. He permitted the consumption on the Sabbath of food cooked or gathered on that day by non-Jews, and the use of the income of a business which operated seven days a week.
