Israelite, youngest son of Jacob. The tribe of Benjamin occupied territory between Ephraim and Judah, which included Jerusalem.
2) (Benjamin, Israel ben Joseph) (1818-64)
Romanian explorer and writer. He journeyed in the Near East, Asia, North Africa and North America. He attempted to discover the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel and published an account of his travels. His Drei Jahre in Amerika is the first compre-hensive account of Jewish communities in the US.
