Francis Hariri was an important member of the politburo of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and a Christian who was assassinated by the Tawhid, an extremist Islamist group in northern Iraq, on 18 February 2001. Hariri also served as the governor of Irbil (Arbil) and as a minister in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Irbil.
