The Kalhur Kurds were one of the largest tribes or tribal confederations in the Kirmanshah area of Iran and along the Ottoman-Persian border. In the 1830s the Kalhur were still largely Ahl-i Haqq, but by the early 1900s—when they played an important role — they had become at least outwardly Shia. The rapacious Daud Khan was the paramount leader of the Kalhur during the first decade of the 20th century. After his death his eldest surviving son and grandson competed for the leadership, and tribal fortunes declined.
