SYN: gemmation.

bud·ding (budґing) 1. a form of asexual reproduction in which a portion of the organism's body is thrust out and then becomes separated, forming a new individual. The larger part is considered the parent and the smaller one the bud. Called also gemmation. 2. the process by which a new blood vessel arises from a preexisting vessel. 3. a method of release of virus from a cell after replication has taken place. Viral protein associates itself with an area of cell membrane, which forms a coat or envelope around the virus; the enveloped virus then is released by pinching off.
